Introduction

For release in the Advances in Environmental Engineering and Green Technologies (AEEGT) Book Series.

ISSN: 2326-9162

Bioremediation is an emerging field of environmental research. Nowadays, heavy metal pollution and oil spillage are major global concerns Hence an efficient technology is needed to reduce the risk of heavy metal pollution and oil spills. In order to avoid ambiguity with regard to the approach utilized, the present book constitutes the recent literature on strategies and technologies of bioremediation in different areas. The objective of a bioremediation process is to immobilize contaminants (reactants) or to transform them to chemical products no longer hazardous to human health and the environment. For certain cases in which contaminants pose no significant risk to sensitive receptors, e.g. water supply wells, surface water bodies, etc., intrinsic bioremediation may be an appropriate strategy. For other cases in which receptors are at risk, an enhanced (engineered) bioremediation strategy may be necessary. Enhanced bioremediation can be performed in-situ. Bioremediation is not a panacea for soil and groundwater contamination. A successful, cost-effective bioremediation process is dependent on hydrogeologic conditions, contaminant signature, microbial ecology, and other spatial/temporal factors that vary widely. Biotreatability studies are necessary components of the program so that remedial design data is collected cost-effectively. Biotreatability studies can be performed to evaluate whether site conditions are conducive for bio-remediation.

Objective
This book will aim to provide relevant theoretical and practical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area. It will be written for professionals who want to improve their understanding of the strategic role of bioremediation at different levels of the bioremediation research and knowledge, that is, heavy metal pollution, toxicity, remediation methods, and strategies to manage waste in industries, which is a global concern. Also it will include emerging areas dealing with bioremediation, such as Genetically Engineered Microorganisms, Enhanced Anaerobic Bio-remediation, Bioleaching, Biobleaching, Microbial Metal Mobilization, Indigenous Microbial Bio-remediation, Phyto-remediation, Application of Genomics and Proteomics in Bio-remediation, and many others, and is useful as a textbook or as a volume for the experienced engineer or scientist working in the field.

Target Audience
The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals and researchers working in the fields of environmental engineering and environmental pollution management in various disciplines, e.g. biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, life sciences, environmental sciences, proteomics, genomics, bioremediation, toxicity management, environmental pollution, industries, etc. Moreover, the book will provide insights and support executives concerned with the management of waste, toxicity, information and strategy development in different types of industries and environments. The strategies covered in this book can be applied in situ or ex situ, depending on the site in which they will be applied. It covers the most cost-effective techniques in bioremediation technologies and the most cutting-edge research on bioremediation and its applications.
